Second Skin Aftercare

I use second skin (also known as a derm bandage or by several brand names like Sandierm, Tegaderm, DermSheild, Recovery, etc) to protect and heal the tattoos I make for people. These form a "semipermeable membrane" that keeps bacteria out, fluids in, and allows oxygen to reach the skin.  What's important to know is that means this product heals tattoos quickly and with minimal effort on the part of the client.  Reducing the risk of complications and keeping tattoos vivid and crisp.

Directions for Second Skin Use

The First 24 Hours

• The "Ink Sack": It is completely normal for the bandage to fill with a dark, murky fluid (plasma mixed with excess ink). It might look messy, but it's actually protecting the tattoo.

• When to remove early: If the seal breaks and fluid leaks out, or if water gets under the bandage while showering, it must be removed immediately to prevent bacteria from getting trapped. You should also remove if you start to notice redness or heat coming from the non-tattooed area of the bandage; this is a sign of an allergic reaction. It won't upset the healing but it is uncomfortable.

The Long Haul (3–5 Days)

• Ideally, second skin should stay on for 3 to 5 days. This is the "sweet spot" for realism tattoos to bypass the heaviest scabbing phase.

• Showering: You can shower normally as second skin is water-resistant. Avoid submerging it in baths, pools, or the lake.

• DO NOT pop, squeeze, or otherwise try to mess with the bandage.  Leave it alone as much as you can.

Safe Removal

• The Shower Method: Remove the bandage under warm, running water. The heat helps loosen the medical-grade adhesive.

• The "Command Strip" Technique: Do not rip it off like a Band-Aid. Instead, grab a corner and pull it down and away from the tattoo (stretching the plastic out) rather than pulling it straight up. This is much gentler on the fresh skin.

Post-Care

• Wash: Once the film is off, wash the area with a fragrance-free, antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold) using only your clean hands—no washcloths.

• Pat Dry: Use a clean paper towel to pat it dry. Let it air out for 15 minutes.

• Moisturize: Apply a very thin layer of unscented lotion (like Lubriderm or Cetaphil). If it looks shiny, you used too much.
