With Answers From Mike

How do I book a consultation with you in Chicago?

I am always taking on new clients and offer free consultations.  To book one, please send an email to me at duboisarts.tattoos@gmail.com or fill out the booking form here.

What is Black and Grey realism? Is surrealism the same thing?

Black and grey realism is exactly what it sounds like.  It is a tattoo done to look like real life (normally based on a photograph) using black ink diluted with water.  Surrealism is similar, except where realism replicates a photograph surrealism uses a mixture of photos, drawing and other creative elements.

How do realism tattoos age over time?

A common misconception is that realism tattoos do not age well, and tattoos require line work. All a tattoo needs to age properly is the right amount of black and contrast.  Black and grey specifically should be tattooed darker than it will heal. I always tell clients "I can tattoo for instagram or I can tattoo for you. I can't do both."

I usually tattoo over multiple sessions and you can see healed sections of tattoos in my portfolio.

How do you determine price for a tattoo?

I charge a flat half day rate plus an additional hourly for anything over that.  I am usually able to give a fairly accurate quote during the consultation, but final price can vary for a number of reasons. I always try my best to move quickly without sacrificing quality.

Will you design something up before the appointment?

I try to always have a design ready before you arrive to your first session, but I do not make it available before then.  I always schedule plenty of extra time to make any changes we might need to on that day.

What is your current wait time for new projects?

While I try to book consultations as soon as possible, it is normally 3-6 months from the consultation till the first session.

Can you use realism to cover up existing tattoos or scars?

Yes! Realism can be used for cover ups. It is not as straight forward as other styles but with some careful planning and technical skill it can be done.

Do you take on small realism pieces or only large scale work?

While generally I focus on large scale tattoos, I do take on smaller projects for people if they peak my interest.  I do have a 4 hour minimum for appointments, so keep that in mind when booking.

What certifications do you hold?

Illinois requires all tattooers to hold a BBP and work at a shop. Contrary to common belief tattoo artists are not licensed here.  I am licensed in other states however for conventions and other travel dates. I am also voluntarily CPR and First Aid certified.

Do you require a deposit to book an appointment.

Yes, I require a modest non-refundable down payment at the time of booking.
